“Over the last 8 years, ZooTampa has steadily advanced our vision of becoming a world-class conservation organization. From earning international recognition through Nat Geo’s Secrets of the Zoo: Tampa to the recent opening of Florida Waters and the completion of the $33 million Guardians of Wildlife Campaign, our transformation has been bold and inspiring.
Today, I am proud to announce that we have reached another major milestone as we continue our march toward the future as a premier conservation organization and Florida’s most-attended cultural institution.
The Hillsborough County Commission approved a motion to proceed forward with finalizing the contract with ZooTampa for $75 million in CIT funds for capital improvements that support the care of endangered and threatened species, expand public education initiatives, drive local and regional economic growth, and increase opportunities for friends and families to form lasting connections with animals and each other.
The funds will be combined with private fundraising and zoo operational funds to achieve greater impact and bring to life ZooTampa’s transformative $150 million master plan over the next 15 years, which includes:
- Modernization of Asia area to enhance animal welfare with expanded naturalistic multi-species environments that immerse guests amid some of the world’s most endangered species including orangutans and tigers.
- Expansion of Australia to introduce a new family ride that caters to all age groups, providing a shared thrilling experience for everyone.
- Transformation of Africa the expanded multi-species habitats in this area reinforces the Zoo’s unwavering commitment to the conservation and protection of endangered species. Visitors will have the opportunity to witness unforgettable encounters with African elephants, which provide magnificent vistas that enhance the overall guest experience.
- Growth of Zoo with South America, which would be the pinnacle of our transformation with the expansion of the Zoo’s footprint across the street near the Hillsborough River. Within the area, immersive guest settings with habitats featuring various South American species, unique dining and special-event venues, and multiple public access points to Lowry Park, allowing residents and Zoo visitors alike to enjoy more of the riverfront.
This funding comes at a pivotal moment for ZooTampa. With CRA (Community Redevelopment Area) dollars not available in our area to reinforce our sustainability, the County’s investment with the Zoo’s match ensures we can continue advancing critical wildlife conservation, expanding educational opportunities for families, and strengthening our role as a cultural and economic anchor for our community. We are profoundly grateful for the trust placed in us and remain committed to being exceptional stewards of these resources for the residents of Hillsborough County.
We would like to thank Commissioner Wostal, whose leadership and advocacy were instrumental in championing our request, as well as the other commissioners who voted in support and the county staff for their partnership, professionalism, and dedication to serving Hillsborough County residents.
