Brown pelicans are very social birds and oftentimes breed in colonies of up to several thousand! They fly to and from their fishing grounds in a v-formation or lines just above the water’s surface . They are also strong swimmers and flyers which allow them to be pretty avid hunters. Pelicans will dive out of the sky and into the water to catch fish. However, they never let themselves be fully submerged.
They use their gular pouch to catch and surface fish. This also helps them to drain out all of the water from their prey before eating it. Most of the time, they will forage during the day due to the good lighting source, but can be seen hunting during full moons because the light is bright.
A brown pelican’s pouch can hold about 3x as much as its stomach.
